Allyson
Wieland is a boomerang Chapel Hillian.
She grew up in the Briarcliff section
of town. After 12 years up north,
Allyson and her husband Charles
returned to Chapel Hill in 1997,
much to the delight of her parents.
Allyson
has an undergraduate degree in Home
Economics. She also has a law degree
from Georgetown and a master's from
Philadelphia Biblical University.
One of Allyson's more memorable
jobs was serving as law clerk to
the Honorable Claude Hilton at the
U.S. District Court in Alexandria,
Virginia, where she experienced
the judicial system from the inside
out. After clerking, she became
an associate at the firm of Steptoe
& Johnson in Washington, DC.
She was in the regulatory practice
group and divided her time between
environmental litigation and defending
a major oil company in a class action.
When asked if she misses her previous
life, Allyson replies, "I miss
the pulse of being in the nation's
capitol while current events unfolded.
But now that I've adjusted to the
quieter pace of North Carolina,
I don't think I could return to
that frenzied lifestyle."
Also
during her time in Washington, Allyson
ushered at the Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts. "This
was one of the most enriching experiences
of my life," she explains.
"Imagine! Actually getting
paid to watch live performances
of world-renowned musicians, actors,
and ballet companies every weekend."
Wanting
to use her skills and training to
enhance local church ministry, Allyson
enrolled at Philadelphia Biblical
University in 1994. After completing
the program, she found herself coming
full circle when she and Charles
moved back to Chapel Hill. As T.S.
Eliot aptly put it, "[T]he
end of all our exploring will be
to arrive where we started and know
the place for the first time."
Prior
to coming to The Church of the Good
Shepherd, Allyson served as Office
Manager for four years at a Methodist
church. At CGS, Allyson works closely
with the diaconate in overseeing
the day-to-day operations. If you
have a question about your contribution
statement or need to be reimbursed,
ask for Allyson.
Off
the clock, Allyson loves to read
and considers her library card her
most prized possession. Since 1999,
she has led a book club devoted
to studying the works of C.S. Lewis.
The group meets in Southern Village
two Monday nights per month. Check
with her to hear about the current
selection.
