Though the seeds of our church go back to 1985, The Church of the Good Shepherd was organized as a particular church on May 31, 1987 with 66 charter members under the church planting leadership of our current Senior Minister David Bowen. Even then our calling was to be a 1000 member resource church for the community. We started worship in an elementary school in Chapel Hill; and when we outgrew that space after three years, we moved to a middle school in Durham. After five years in that middle school, we moved into our own facility on 12.5 acres of land on Garrett Road. By the year 2000 that 350 seat Phase I sanctuary was inadequate for the 800 people attending, so we built Phase II to seat 700 people in a future fellowship hall. When attendance reached a peak of 1200 we did two things to handle it. We planted Christ Community Church with a hundred people, and we built our third and final phase sanctuary which seats 1,000.
